ALLY FRIENDLY

This work represents two ideas of origin and purpose – where I’m from, and where I’m going. The colours throughout the design were drawn from the land of my mob, the Bardi Jawi people, where the red earth meets the blue sea. The art also sees the realisation of Indigenous people being connected across Country, centred by strength in identity and action.

Ethical & Sustainable Fashion

Bio: A descendant of the Bardi Jawi people of the Kimberley region of north-Western Australia, Bebe Backhouse is a writer and artist who’s called Narrm (Melbourne) home for ten years. Beginning his creative practice as a classical pianist and composer, Bebe was awarded a West Australian Youth Award at twenty-one for his work as a music teacher to young Indigenous people. He later made a name for himself as a producer and director of theatre, festivals, and public art projects across Australia, including international dance and theatre projects. Holding senior positions at leading public arts organisations across Narrm, Bebe has successfully fostered many artistic opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creatives to showcase their work in mainstream platforms, allowing Traditional Culture to thrive in the public realm.

How recycled shirts are made, you ask? – Cuttings from organic cotton textile production are Salvaged, then shredded and turned back into soft cotton fibres. Add fibres made from recycled plastic bottles to obtain the cotton and polyester blend. Spin the blended fibres into fine yarn to make fabrics. Finally, finish the production with care to create a high-quality organic cotton t shirt. Certified under the Global Recycle Standard (GRS) and the Organic Content Standard. What is “Slow Fashion” – Slow fashion is the widespread reaction to fast fashion. It’s thoughtful, intentional, and holistic. It’s also an argument for hitting the brakes on excessive production, overcomplicated supply chains, and mindless consumption. The movement works towards creating an industry that benefits the planet, all people and animals.
